What MapRail does

MapRail brings live train locations, working timetables, station boards and disruption information into one place. The map helps you understand what is moving now, while service pages show how each train is scheduled to travel and how reported movements compare with that plan.

The longer-term aim is to make railway history easier to explore—not just the current passenger timetable, but freight movements, special trains and the operational detail that often disappears from public-facing journey planners.

Live railway map

Explore passenger and freight services, select a train to see its route and follow calling points without leaving the map.

Timetables and actuals

Compare scheduled times with confirmed movement reports and clearly identified predictions based on the latest known delay.

Beyond passenger trains

MapRail aims to represent freight and special workings alongside passenger services, while being honest where data is less complete.

Historical railway data

Timetables are retained so that services and planned routes can remain discoverable after the operating day has passed.

How to interpret the map

Passenger positions can often be animated using successive location reports. Freight feeds may provide only a last-confirmed reporting point, so MapRail avoids creating a smooth animation that could imply a precision the source information does not support. Predictions are labelled separately from confirmed records throughout the site.

MapRail is independent and should not replace official journey advice. See the railway disclaimer for important limitations.
